A pre-service teacher experience

In one of my classes I noticed that using technology such as, videos and songs, students became more interested in paying attention to the classroom.  Using the board instead of correcting out loud was more profitable than repeating several times.  Many students prefer it when they have the grammar explanation instead of reading activities so they can study and use grammar points for mechanical exercises. Approaching students, being friends and honest was an attitude that made our interaction better as teacher-student. Being a pre-service teacher and sharing classes with another one has shown until nowadays that respect and patience is really important for a productive class and a good environment.

  1. Hi, Ana Carolina

I totally agree with you. I truly believe that performing as an English teacher at a public school taught me a lesson: respect and patience are two necessary elements to work in a good environment. Especially if we work in a team, just like happens in our PIBID program. All in all, just like our friend above, Camila, I also think that this experience made me not only a better teacher, but also a better person.

  2. Hello everyone!

I am here to talk about the difference that technology makes in class. I learned that if you try to involve their world in your class using technology the results will be much better. Working with texts and videos that make part of their lives, such as social networks is a great option. The students demonstrate interest and they participate, because it is something that they use, it is alive for them.

  3. I agree that using technology in class can make the students more interested in the subject that we are going to teach. But, unfortunately, in my experience, we can give the most fun class: with videos, music or a movie, but if they don't want to learn, they won't learn. Because they just don't want to.
For me the key is that. It is essential that they want to learn! And how can I do that? I'm still trying to figure that out.

I totally agree with Ana in this point. In the beginning of the year I used to talk to the students as their superior. It used to be really unpleasant because it seemed that I could never really reach the students.
Then I decided to change my approach. I started to talk more to them, being friendly, get to know each student in particular, their likes and dislikes, what they were thinking about the classes, etc. And from the moment I changed my posture towards them the classes really changed. The students started to respect me more and we became able to get to an understanding every time it was needed. They started to interact more and to feel more comfortable and confident.
That’s why I believe that this attitude can really improve the interactions among teachers and students.

  5. I agree with Ana, using technology was a differential to my practicum. When my partner and I were asked to prepare a unit to cover a bimester, we focussed on adding some kind of entertainment, such as videos, videoclips, trailers and series episodes. And it seems that by doing it, the students maintained more interested in the classes and their participation increased.

And I have also the same opinion about respect and patience, for the reason that in the beginning of my practicum I did not know how to deal with the students and neither do they, but with patience we built a friend and respectful relationship and both parts could decide and participate together.

  6. Ana,

I believe that technology makes all difference during the classes, nowaday it’s a powerful tool to call the students attention.
About respect and patience, I’m sure that it’s impossible to teach whatever subjects whithout them.

    see you...

  7. The use of technology is really very attractive, students change their behavior and participate in class. It is a feature that has to be researched more to harness their full potential.

  8. Adolescents are very visual and need something to distract them. It was a great idea, Ana, to use extra material such as songs and videos, as you did.
I think teachers should listen more their students because we can believe that our methodology is good, but it can get students bothered. Making something different sometimes is a way to take students attention again and make them interact by themselves.
